Put My Shit on a Coat!

Lindsey Thornburg Cloak, lindseythornburg.com
this has got to be one of the most crazy, beautiful coats i've seen in a while. i don't see that it's based on native american motifs. i just see bold lines and chunks of color. so how do i get my a paintings on stuff like this? how do i transform a painting into a textile design? i posted this question and on FB and got some good feedback, but i still don't get it. textile designers and surface designers use patterns and repetition. i do that, but not in the same way and i don't know how to make the transition. yes, i know - textile design is its own art form. but i just want to give someone a painting and say, "ok, make it work." i can't afford or am interested in going back to school. but when i see stuff like what's above and below, i think, "damn! i need to tap that!" i know i'm clueless when it comes to abstract textile designers or other fiber artists - so if you got any recommendations, LET ME KNOW!

  1. Hi Jennifer
You can apply images to fabric easily by laser printing on to special paper and ironing it on or using a heat press but the drape can be a bit dodgey. Or you could use a company to print it digitally, its something I have fansatised about doing they do it here http://www.rasmart.co.uk/ its a Uk site but the sam ething is every where...look forward to seeing lush long dresses swathed in your designs

  4. I think your paintings would look better un-patterned; I think a large print sorta off-centered on a coat or dress would be really bold & eye catching. Just like taking it off the wall and wrapping yourself in it!

  5. @matt; thanks! yeah, i think that too. i'm not sure turning my paintings into patterns would work. but i did see an awesome rug/tapestry at the MoMA abstract expressionist show and thought, "yeah, that's something i'd be into!"
