The Continuum of Nuttiness

a while ago i asked my brother for some good, summer, page turning, fiction suggestions. i had a 2 week vacation coming up and planned on soaking up some rays, eating, drinking and reading. he offered the names of 4 of his colleagues at UF: Jill Ciment, David Leavitt, Padgett Powell, and Mary Robison. all are fantastic. i even read a biography by Leavitt of Alan Turing. full list below.

her website is great! she has synopses of all her titles. (this lady is one crazy bitch and has had one crazy life!...at least the first half)

Heroic Measures
Teeth of the Dog
Half a Life

reading a biography is not what i had in mind, but the book on turing was really interesting. had no clue who he was. i couldn't follow all the technical jargon, but it didn't get in the way of my enjoyment.
The Marble Quilt had one story i especially enjoyed which was basically an email correspondence between several people.

"whatever presented itself to me as partaking of the continuum of nuttiness was the thing for me. i would not act my age or observe my station." - from A Woman Named Drown
just about every character this guy creates (that i've read) is out to lunch. which is why i like his writing so much. there's nothing typical about his stories, but they're delivered with nonchalance.

A Woman Named Drown
Mrs. Hollingsworth's Men

sorta along the same whacko lines as powell above, but she has a dark humor to her work. her writing seems minimal and direct, not fussy. still waiting on a book request from the library for Why Did I Ever? she has lots more books, but my broke ass can't afford to buy them right now...soon!
