Reconfiguring the Body

The National Academy Museum recently had a great show, Reconfiguring the Body in American Art. This museum is another one of nyc hidden treasures. just like the frick, it was someone's fabulous home. you get a 1, 2 punch w/these types of venues; grandeur and intimacy. i also love it cuz it's rarely packed w/visitors. every time i've gone it's been me and maybe 5 other people in the whole place. i so want to sneak around the place and find those hidden stairwells that only the 'help' used and the secret paneled walls that lead to other areas. the painting above wasn't in the show (the academy's website isn't very generous w/photos) but i do love the way she handles the paint. visit her website to see how she depicts herself in different guises and emotional states. more work that blew my mind below:

Gun Head by Nancy Grossman
WTF!? she also had a print at auction of this series at Phillips de Pury

John Wilson, Monumental Head 2003

William Merrit Chase, The Young Orphan (at her ease)
beautiful, lush red background - look at those 2 little ovals just hangin out.

Robert Frederick Blum, Two Idlers
i like the painting for 2 reasons; the subject matter (i'm all for hanging out and being idle!) and the way he used different painting techniques thru out the painting.

Lesley Dill, Threaded Poem Face #3

Robert Rauschenberg, Booster
