i've recently completed
10 new paintings that reflect my current obsession with geometric patterns, Navajo and other types of weaving, and of course stripes. a lot of these started out by first drawing a grid on the surface. i don't worry myself w/perfection, it's more about getting general ideas down. you can see from NY12#12 above, that the grid for the predominately black & white part is no where near perfect. i don't measure out my grids, i eye ball it. so when i try to execute a pattern on it, it comes out all kinds of wrong and crazy...PERFECT! not to mention it's a rarity when i can draw a pattern w/out messing up. i lose track of what i'm doing (get bored) and lots of times my eyes are just buggy from the repeating shapes and bright colors. victim of my own art making - hah! all of the 10 new beauties are available for purchase at
my Big Cartel shop.
Yay, thanks for sharing... My favorite is the last one, #21. I love the subtlety of the black and yellow patterning. Also... You know, Agnes Martin didn't measure her lines or grids. When you work with so much repetition and perceived precision, I think it's important to maintain parts of your practice that leave room for blips and imperfection. It helps maintain the presence of the hand, especially in a digital world.
ReplyDeletethanks Jesse! WOW - did not know that about Agnes Martin. and yes, that's what my work is all about "presence of the hand". when i first came to NYC to focus on my art (2001) it seemed like every show i went to had perfect paintings. i was more consumed w/how the hell they made the work, rather than just enjoying or reacting to the work. plus, i'm just not that anal!
ReplyDeleteLove the new art. I'm a new fan, keep going! :)
